“I’ve never fully believed the official story about 9/11, and for years I’ve had questions that never seemed to get satisfactory answers. This book brings together so much information that deserves a closer look. I wish I had read it sooner.”
About the book
On August 6, 2001, the President of the United States was handed a one-page brief. Its title was “Bin Ladin Determined To Strike in US.” Thirty-six days later, the towers fell.
That document was not a rumour, a leak or a theory. It was declassified in 2004 and anyone can read it — and it is only the beginning of what the United States government knew before September 11.
The CIA watched two of the hijackers at an al-Qaeda meeting in Malaysia in January 2000, knew one of them held an American visa, tracked him to Los Angeles, and never told the FBI. Both men then lived openly in San Diego under their own names. One was listed in the phone book. For seven months they rented a room from an FBI informant.
In July 2001 an FBI agent in Phoenix wrote a memo warning that bin Laden was sending students to American flight schools. It was sent at the lowest priority on the scale and was still awaiting action on September 11. Three weeks before the attack, a flight school in Minnesota called the FBI about a man paying cash to fly a 747 who could not fly a Cessna. Headquarters refused a warrant to open his laptop for twenty-six days.
9/11: They Knew follows that paper trail from the first warning to the last redaction — built entirely on declassified files, congressional testimony and court records, and written like a thriller rather than a government report.
